Exclusive Excerpt from Bare, My Current Work In Progress

I’m in an unusually good mood today, so I thought I’d share an excerpt from the novel I’m writing—working title is Bare. I’m over 80k words into it. It’s an M/M Romance (Gay For You theme, with light BDSM elements) about an arts professor and painter named Adam, who asks a sophomore named Ev to model for him privately as he prepares for an upcoming show of his work. Ev is the sexually confused son of a conservative Republican Kansas Senator. Those are the basics. Below is a scene that takes place a few hours into Ev’s first time going to the studio in Adam’s apartment to model for him. This is entirely un-edited, so please forgive any errors. Happy Friday, everyone!

“Look, I’m sorry about what happened over there. I—”

“Don’t. Don’t apologize for that. Seriously.” Adam flipped the patties, set the spatula down and looked straight at Ev. “The whole reason I’m doing these pieces is because of how difficult it is to be vulnerable as a man, especially when it comes to sexuality. There’s a whole lot of trust involved and it fucks with your head, for everyone. I’d never expect a teenage guy to be thrown into this situation and not be overwhelmed or uncomfortable. That’s why it’s important we be honest with each other. Okay?” Ev nodded. “If you figure out, like, hey, this is too much for me, or you realize a boundary line has been reached or crossed, tell me. Please.”

“I like that this is so important to you,” Ev confessed. “Makes me want to do it more.”

“It is important. It affects everyone, because the struggle to be ourselves as men defines so much in our culture, subtly if not outright. It influences politicians on every scale. Police, doctors, lawyers, construction workers, women, children, dogs. You name it. But why are so many men afraid to be their true selves? What are we trying to prove?” With barely any pause, he added, “Can I ask you a question? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. What did you mean when you said you weren’t a sexual person?”

“Oh fuck,” Ev groaned, trying to laugh it off. “Feel free to not listen to every single thing I say.”

“No, I’m curious,” Adam persisted.

“Jesus. Well, um…”

“Are you a virgin?”

“No,” Ev said somewhat defensively. “I, you know, had a girlfriend. She was my best friend through grade school. Mia. We dated a while.”

“Okay,” Adam said thoughtfully, holding his chin in a hand, the other crossed over his chest. He looked like he was studying Ev, which made him self-conscious again. “A girlfriend. Just the one?”

“Not everyone needs to go beat off to Playboys constantly.”

“Have you at all?”

“Have I beaten off to Playboys?”

“Yeah.”

“No.”

“Huh.”

“No,” Ev argued. “It’s not interesting. It’s not. It’s normal. Don’t look at me like that.”

“All right. Sorry. Have you gotten hard looking at Playboys?”

“No. It’s fake and gross.”

“Wow. Strong words,” Adam said with a curious smirk.

“Can we stop talking about my boners, please?”

“Well, I’m kind of doing a painting about one,” Adam said, like a smartass, thumbing back over his shoulder. “So it seems like a valid conversation topic to me.” He flipped the patties again, then turned the burner off and slid the skillet off of it. Then he planted his hands on his hips and widened his stance. He looked ready to defend himself or his ideas, in whatever way necessary.

“God, you really drive me crazy,” Ev complained, rubbing a hand over his face.

Adam laughed. “I drive you crazy. Why?”

“Because you’re aggravating.”

“Okay,” Adam said with a nod and quirk of his lips. “It’s better than fake and gross.”

Ev froze. He stared at a spot on the counter, blinking too much, his jaw clenched, his hands curling into fists.

Quietly, Adam said, “I’m just going to say it, okay? Because that’s how I work. I don’t let these things go unacknowledged, not when it matters. But I don’t want to freak you out or push you away. I just want honesty here.” He paused, then called Ev’s name. “Evelyn.”

“It’s Ev,” he said fiercely.

“Do I aggravate you because I made your dick hard? Evelyn is a beautiful name. It’s classy. Don’t be embarrassed by it.”

“Fuck! Can you not do that, please?”

“Do what?”

“You do this thing where you ask multiple questions or merge comments on separate topics in one thought. It feels like you’re trying to trick me into talking about shit. Like you knew I wasn’t going to acknowledge that shit and so you added the thing about my name just to jab me.”

“So it’s true then?”

“Stop,” Ev said loudly, his deep voice booming.

“Stop what? Stop making you think about who you are and what you want? What you like? Why? Does it scare you that much?”

He got up off the stool, hurrying to his clothes and escape. He was halfway there when his arm was grabbed, just like in his memory of James, only he was pulled to a halt then turned around. Adam was too close, his breath, his heat, his blue eyes and soft lips right in Ev’s space. Staring at Adam’s lips, Ev shook off his hold.

Adam touched the side of Ev’s jaw, the fingers curling around it. Ev tried to twist his face away, grabbed hold of the front of Adam’s shirt meaning to do… what? Push him away? Punch him in the face? Pull him closer? He forgot once he had a handful of the silky softness of the fabric, his knuckles brushing the firm chest hidden beneath. Adam was strong, maybe stronger than Ev. It was a dumb move to pick a fight with a guy who could probably kick your ass.

The moment breathed, lengthening until it was out of control.

Finally, Ev tossed his head, throwing off Adam’s hand, which reached for Ev’s left hip instead. It wrapped bare skin, the robe still untied, hanging open. Adam’s hand traced the hipbone, his thumb sliding just inside the ridge. Ev’s breath caught. Watching Adam’s mouth like it was the most dangerous thing in the room, Ev frowned, fell silent.

“There’s the line. You feel it? It’s right there.” His thumb caressed in a longer stroke, stirring Ev’s cock, fast.

Adam’s lips got closer and Ev couldn’t move. He grunted as Adam kissed him, his fist tightening in the shirt, pushing at Adam’s chest as his mouth chased the kiss, his head angling to the side as Adam’s tongue teased Ev’s lip, just a little.

The kiss ended, their foreheads touching. Ev was panting.

“Now it’s gone,” Adam said with a heated grin. “It’s that easy. What are you so scared of?”

“Everything. Why are you doing this?”

“Because it’s important. I’m taking this off.” He grabbed the robe instead of Ev’s hip. With a firm yank, he pulled it off. Then he grabbed Ev’s hip again, moving him backward with determination. “Lay down.”

Review Recap for Double Heat!

DoubleHeat_CvrPDFIt’s taken me longer than usual to get this post compiled, but I’m very happy to be able to announce that Loving the Master AND Caged Jaye are both finished with edits and moved through to Production. I’ll announce release dates as soon as I can, but we’re aiming for winter. In the meantime, here’s what reviewers had to say about Double Heat (Twin Ties 3)

~* 5 Stars from the Novel Approach *~

“All in all, this story stopped being about twincest, stopped being about anything taboo. It’s about the love these four men have for each other. It’s about healing and getting back that self-worth, to finally move on, to love and be loved back. It’s about never being alone. I can’t wait for the next book.” – Lynn, The Novel Approach

***

~* 5 Stars from Love Bytes Reviews *~

“These books…just DAMN!! …For those who don’t mind delving into something different and something darker…this is a really great series. I really applaud the author for taking the chance and writing about a love that isn’t the “norm”. That falls outside of what some people find that they can handle. I applaud the Publishing house that allows author’s and readers the chance to explore things that fall outside the box. I look forward to the next installment.” – Roberta, Love Bytes Reviews

***

~* 5 Stars from Hearts on Fire Reviews *~

“This is one of the best series I’ve read and I longingly wait for the next installment. Highly recommended!!!”

***

~* Advance Review from Agony Tate *~

“This book was heartbreaking and devastating. It was perfect, absolutely perfect… I really didn’t appreciate the first two books until I read the third. I didn’t see where this story was going or how much the vastly different tones of each book spoke to the mindsets of the foursome. I didn’t see how you could gage where these people were in their lives, minds and relationships by the sex… This stops being a story about twins and incest and sex, it stops being about the taboo, and starts being about survival and anchoring and love. Things that Books 1 and Book 2 kept telling us, and book 3 showed us… Read this book. You must read this book. Get the first two, pre-order book 3. DO IT!” – Agony Tate

***

~* 5 Stars from The Blogger Girls *~

“I love this series. Who knew I could not only read a double taboo book, but actually freaking love it? Maybe it had more to do with the realism the author brings to the story, and the many, many feels, but I love this series and highly recommend it to everyone, even those who normally steer clear of taboo or twincest.” – Susan Sixty-Five

***

~* 4.25 Stars from Joyfully Jay Reviews *~

“It was masterfully written […] This book, and this series, is one I definitely recommend you pick up.” – Kris, Joyfully Jay Reviews

***

~* 4 Stars from Prism Book Alliance *~

“I think one thing you can be assured of in a Lynn Kelling book is that she doesn’t pull punches.” – Caroline

“I mean, it is SUPER HOT” – Jessewave

Thank you so much to all of the reviewers for their time and feedback! It is much appreciated 🙂

This is the third book in the Twin Ties series. Though previously banned by Amazon, all three books are now available there. If you’d be interested in reading a fourth book in this series, let me know! 🙂

Blurb: When Evan and Brennan moved in with their boyfriends, Alek and Luka, they knew things would be complicated, but as their privacy gets eroded, and people around them begin to notice the tangled nature of the four-way relationship, coping becomes a struggle. After Brennan leaves on a brief trip home, and Evan remains behind to enjoy the full attention of both Alek and Luka, the careful balance of things gets thrown off.

Ex-boyfriends surface, haunting Evan and Brennan in similar ways as regret for poor choices threatens their happiness, and the sexual freedom displayed earlier in their lives draws predators willing to use violence, coercion, mind-games and force to take what they want. Though Luka and Alek struggle to protect those they love, it soon becomes clear that the dangers surrounding them will find ways to rush in, trying to take what belongs to them. (M/M+)

Excerpt:

“Why isn’t he answering?!” Evan descended straight into panic mode, wanting to tear his hair out. Everything—with Drew, with his worries about being honest with the twins, with his worries about Brennan—twisted into a knot that he couldn’t think around. It was an ache in his chest, pressure squeezing his throat, and a clammy chill on his skin. He became aware, slowly, of other aches in his body, like he’d taken a bad fall or something and had bruises all over. And, bizarrely, there was an ache in his arm. Underneath it all, there was fear. “Something’s wrong. I can feel it. Do you hear me? I can feel it!”

They were all standing in the living room. Carter and Presley both had expressions like they didn’t know what they’d walked into, and now had no idea how to help.

Alek had been pacing when Evan had opened the door. Now, he walked over to Evan and pulled him into a tight hug. “We tried calling him after I got off the phone with you. Then these guys showed up, saying they hadn’t gotten Brennan to answer their calls for the past two days either. And we’d been talking about the store—me and Luka. I can’t remember Drew’s last name, or the car he drives. I should have checked, made sure… I didn’t like what he’d said, or how he’d said it, and… But it doesn’t matter. It was just a weird coincidence. We don’t have any contact with him anymore. It’s been years.”

Luka was standing there, hands on his hips, his mouth tight, his eyes staring at nothing. He looked like he wanted to punch a wall. Presley was trying to talk to him, but Luka was almost unresponsive with the degree of his unease and stress.

“Dude, he’s fine. He’s gonna be fine,” Presley was saying.

“I’ve been trying to reach him all morning!” Luka shouted.

Presley held up his hands, gave Luka a look to get him to calm down.

Luke softened his tone just a little and said, “The first couple times, I thought maybe he’d slept in late or was away from the phone, but it’s been hours and he’d not picking up for anyone. Hailey isn’t picking up either, and we don’t have anyone else’s number. We don’t even know who to try!”

“Listen,” Alek said, keeping his arm protectively wrapped around Evan’s shoulders, but speaking to everyone. Carter was sitting on the couch, looking worried as hell. “We went through this same thing with you, Evan, after you took off when Charlie walked in on you and Bren. Remember? You needed space to clear your head. Right? You didn’t call, or check in, but you were okay. We were losing our minds, worrying, searching for you. But it was okay. You turned up when you were ready to. So will Brennan. It seems Brennan may have the same sort of flight instinct that you do. Listen to your gut. What do you feel?”

“I feel like he needs me,” Evan exclaimed. “And I can’t even look for him! What is he even running from? What could have happened? What am I supposed to do? Fly to Louisiana?”

“Maybe it’s nothing,” Carter said, “and Brennan and this Hailey chick went out to eat or something. If they’re somewhere like a party with a ton of people and noise, maybe they just can’t hear their phones, or have them turned them off.”

“Yeah,” Presley agreed, latching onto the suggestion. “Bren said there were a lot of people wanting to see him. Seems like he was a pretty popular guy down there. He’s probably just busy. If I try to call Carter when he’s got a gig, it’s nothin’ but voicemail for like five hours at a time. You know he’s down there with tons of friends. It makes sense. Plus, y’all have admitted that your relationship is odd. He was telling me before he left how he didn’t know how to explain y’all to any of his old friends. Maybe he’s just dealing with a lot and it was easier to turn the phone off for a few hours than have to take calls from multiple boyfriends.”

The words seemed to work wonders on Luka, who exhaled and appeared to release some terror with the breath. “Yeah. That would make sense, actually.”

“And it has been a stressful morning,” Alek admitted, looking at Evan. Luka wiped at his eyes. It made Evan want to go and hug him. “Maybe it’s us that need Brennan and we’re just a little panicked because we haven’t talked to him much the past couple days.”

Agony Tate reviews all 3 books in the Twin Ties series

Whoa. I’m completely blown away and so thankful to Agony Tate for taking the time to read & review all 3 books in the Twin Ties series this week. Check out what she had to say (click through for the full, brutally honest reviews)…

My Brother’s Lover (Twin Ties 1)

“Kelling did a wonderful job of mixing the dirty, raunchy little secret, with a provocative sensual nature. Which is hard, I gotta tell you. And she did it while telling a good story, which is even harder.”

– Agony Tate

Dual Affairs (Twin Ties 2)

DualAffairs_CvrPDF_FIX“There are secrets, lies, betrayal and violence. Actually I was really concerned there for a while (a few times actually), then I remembered there is a third book, so I smacked myself and calmed down… So yeah, this was a pretty damn good read. It’s well written with a wonderful plot, a killer hook (BTW: Lynn, thanks for panic attack in the first freaking chapter!) and honest to God legitimacy. I mean, I cried.”

– Agony Tate

Dual Affairs (formerly Twin Affairs) review & release info

I’m excited to announce that Twin Affairs has been retitled as Dual Affairs, and will be available for purchase on Amazon for the first time ever starting this Friday! Check out this awesome new review for it from Joyfully Jay:

~* 4.5 Stars for Dual Affairs (formerly Twin Affairs) *~

“Ok guys, if you liked My Brother’s Lover, then you are in for one hell of a treat with this second installment. I think it can, technically, work as a standalone, because the author does a great job getting the reader up to speed.

This second installment is a fantastic continuation of Evan, Alek, Brennan, and Luka’s story. There’s hurt and angst balanced by tender loving moments and unbelievably hot sexy times. Overall, it’s a really well-crafted story that I have no qualms about recommending.” – Kris

Thank you to Kris & Joyfully Jay Reviews for the feedback!! The cover reveal for the 3rd installment of the Twin Ties series, Double Heat, is this Saturday, July 25. The book releases August 25!

Coming Soon! Twin Ties 3 & more…

Hey everyone! There’s a lot of good stuff in the pipeline. The cover reveal for Double Heat (Twin Ties 3) will be July 25 with Sinfully Addicted to All Male Romance & Bike Book Reviews. The book’s release is scheduled for August 25! **Read an excerpt here. Stay posted for links, giveaways and more…

I’m also working on wrapping edits for Loving the Master (prequel to Bound by Lies), adding more seduction and heat – there can never be too much! 😉 Next up for editing is my dirty, edgy prison thriller, Caged Jaye (prequel to Arctic Absolution), which will actually land on my plate this weekend ( *bounces with excitement* ). My editor just did his first read and said he loves it!

As I get caught up with all of this my writing time has been limited, but first priority once I can get to it is finishing my painter/muse BDSM, Gay for You Romance, since that’s already 50k words along and I know just what it needs to wrap it up.

Thanks as always for reading <3

Life Update: You May Experience Some Buffering While We Load Your New Reality

To be honest, I’ve been crabby lately. Existence has not been happening as smoothly as it usually does. There have been bumps and sudden bouts of sobbing in inconvenient places. I’ve needed a lot of hugs and more quiet time than I’ve gotten.

This is mostly – but not solely – due to losing my youngest brother at the age of 33 from a fucking untreated bump on the head from a falling, fairly lightweight mirror.

See? The anger crops up. It typically comes hand-in-hand with shock.

They say after you lose someone unexpectedly, you need to adapt to the “new normal”. I’ve heard this phrase a lot since April 26. And, indeed, there is a weird transitioning that has been happening entirely against my will, shaking me up.

I’m currently losing more than just a brother. Maybe it would be easier if that was my only challenge. Maybe not, and this is the universe’s way of keeping me preoccupied so the grief doesn’t win.

I’m losing the vacation/mountain house my family has had since my oldest was a baby, a place with many memories soaked into the rooms and air, which my parents began trying to sell a year ago, but only found a buyer for almost immediately before my brother died. I’m losing my long-time best friend at work, who’s leaving this month on a possibly permanent maternity leave. I’m losing a lot of furniture, including my insanely comfortable (but small) bed. I’m losing my car, which I’ve also had since my oldest was a baby.

It feels like many things at once are slipping through my fingers, and I have no way to hold on.

Then I see my brother’s smiling face before me, or hear an echo of his exuberant laugh, and remember something he knew well – that there are bright sides to every misfortune.

I’m currently gaining a better relationship and closeness with my only remaining, living brother – something I’d secretly yearned for my whole life, with no real hope of ever getting it. You see, my brothers were always too close to let me in. Now the space that’s been left is agonizingly painful, so we’re trying to gather nearer to shrink it down to a manageable size.

I may be gaining a beach house if my parents (maybe? hopefully?) buy one of the ones they’ve been looking at. Because my friend at work is leaving, I’m being promoted even though I’m a part-time (but hard) worker. I’m gaining new furniture (and a bigger bed!) as my parents empty out the recently-sold mountain house. I’m gaining a new car for the first time in 11 years.

The sentimentality is what’s been getting me. I don’t want to let it all go. I’d do anything to keep things the way they were. Anything.

I’m still trying to figure out where my writing fits in with all of this. Some days, it’s only being able to write new chapters in new stories that gets me through a shitty day. Other days, it’s all I can do to show up at my day job, take care of my kids, and not fall apart. There is a lot in the pipeline. New stories are racing to the finish, whether I’m ready or not. My dear friends and readers, if I stumble and fail to keep up, all I can ask is for your patience and understanding that the ground isn’t quite steady under my feet yet.

We buried my brother’s ashes this past Friday morning. It was bright and beautiful. The core of my extended family gathered around his grave and got sunburned as we shared feelings, memories and poems.

This is the poem I read, which I feel is what my beloved brother would tell us now, if he could:

Death Is Nothing At All by Henry Scott-Holland

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

“From the beginning it’s a complicated relationship that even though at times is frustrating and maddening, is also compellingly beautiful, emotionally heart stopping and off the charts HOT!!! Kinky fuckery that had me all of a tremble and totally in awe of Lynn Kellings ability to make the dynamics of their intense, no holds barred play, feel authentic and not just the formulaic ‘bdsm 101’ you generally find in m/m romance… I LOVED this book!” – Macky, Sinfully… Addicted to All Male Romance

“I don’t know what Lynn Kelling was on when she wrote this novella, chocolate, wine, coffee or maybe some kind of aphrodisiac, ‘cause holy hotness, I might need to ship it out to her in crates because I want more! This book is HOT as frickin hell, but not in your face porny hot or sugary kink, it’s classy BDSM, a powerful, yet subtle seduction, with erotic undertones that create an air of sexual tension that literally had me tingling all over! I’m not kidding… I was tingling!” – Monique, Sinfully… Addicted to All Male Romance

“This is a great introduction into how Jenner gets his start of being a Master. Lynn is a great storyteller and one of the best when it comes to BDSM. Every story I’ve read by her always has my full attention and I quickly become enthralled in the storyline.

Whether it’s a novella or a full novel Lynn tells the story brilliantly. You definitely want to read this if you have read Bound by Lies and if you haven’t I would encourage you to read both.” – KathyMac, MM Good Book Reviews

“David takes Jenner under his wing when he finds out the boy’s true nature and what follows is 40 hells kind of HOT!!! I love this little short and seeing as it is a prequel to Bound By Lies, which is already out, this will make you understand Jenner better if you have already read it!

Read this one friends, it is hot hot hot, and a wonderful story to boot! Thanks Lynn, for giving us a read with both heat and substance!” – Becky, Bike Book Reviews

“I loved how Master David was with Jenner and how he helped Jenner realize his dreams were within reach… There are so many wonderful scenes in this short story that only left me longing to go read Bound by Lies to see how Jenner makes out on his own. This was a well written BDSM tale that really just sets the stage for the main story. Another fantastic job by Ms. Kelling.” – JustJen, The Blogger Girls
